Resistance bands, tubes and loops are a simple and cheap method of exercising. In principle this is just a type of material that can be stretched. Depending on the type of material and the density of material, they will offer various levels of resistance. These different levels of resistance are usually shown by different colours as you can see in the image to the right.
Manufacturers have taken this material and then put their own spin on how it can be best used to act as fitness equipment. The use of these bands is wide ranging and they can be used on their own or along with other pieces of fitness equipment. They are also used by physiotherapists who are helping people recover from accidents or injuries to help build up muscle. In fact this is their most popular use.
Can You Get Stronger with Resistance Bands?
That is of course their main purpose. Let's assume that you want to build up the muscles in your arms. To do that you will want to work both the biceps and triceps muscle groups. When you bend your arm at the elbow you work both of those muscles though not a great deal. Now if you attach a resistance band to a fixed point and then hold the other end in your hand and bend your elbow, you work those muscles harder. When you do that then you build up muscle. As it builds you increase the strength of the resistance bands and continue on building up the muscle.
The same applies to any set of muscles in your body so yes resistance bands, loops and tubes are very good for building muscle.
Do Resistance Bands Snap or Break?
Generally speaking and for normal use they will not break. Like anything though if they are not used for the purpose intended then they can snap and break. Fr example if you tried to use them to tow a car then the chances are they will break. (I haven't tried that though) The other thing to keep in mind is that they will weaken as they age or if they are left in cold conditions.
So in most cases they will last for a very long time. If they are used properly and for the general purpose of fitness, then they will not break and are perfectly safe to use.
Benefits of Resistance Bands
There are some noticeable benefits of owning and using resistance bands which I have listed below:
- They are cheap to buy
- Highly versatile - they can work all muscles in the body
- They are super easy to store and also easy to take on holidays or on short breaks
- They are very durable and will last for years
- You can move up through the band ranges for harder workouts
Resistance Loop Bands
These are a classical set of resistance loop bands that are useful for improving strength, using in pilates, and other exercise disciplines such as cross fit and yoga. This is a set of 4 bands that can be used by either men or women and are made from latex and come with a lifetime guarantee.
Like many bands these are 2" wide and 12" long and that does make a useful size to use. They come in a pouch and that makes them easy to carry around. Each one has a different resistance level so that makes them useful for building up your strength over time.
With bands such as these, the prime purpose is to stretch them from their standard length, to about double that and when used in this way, help build up the resistance and in turn your strength.
These are I think ideal for beginners or for anyone who is at home and recovering from an injury. They are simple to use but highly effective.
As I mentioned these can also be used when doing other forms of exercises. They can be used when walking, on an exercise bike, when doing yoga and many other forms of exercises. I think what I like best about them is that they are cheap to buy and simple to use.
