In this article we review the best folding exercise mats, that we believe to great value in the current UK marketplace. These types of mats are really useful for a whole range of fitness and exercise routines. The fact that they can also easily fold up, makes them portable, easy to carry and easy to store away. It also means that they don't take up a lot of space when they are stored.

If you are anything like me, I like to own my own equipment, rather than share it. That is just my own personal preference, and I know many people feel the same way. I like my own fitness clothes, my own basic gear and I also like good quality products, that will last me for a long time.

Who Would Buy a Folding Exercise Mat?

Predominantly, these are used in the world of Yoga. They are however not exclusive to that one type of fitness. Many people will use these at home instead of laying on the floor. That is more true these days, down to the popularity of the harder wooden floors. People also buy these to take to the gym, or to take with them to various types of fitness classes.

People choose folding mats for the reasons that I have already mentioned above. You basically want to pull your mat out, get your workout done and then fold it up and store it out of the way.

Exercise Mats for Gymnasts

People also buy these types of mats for their daughters and sons who are doing gymnastics.

Some people will use these for practising gymnastics or tumbles outside. They are not really designed for that purpose. However, as long as the weather is good, there is no reason that I can think of, why they could not be used for that purpose. At the end of the day, it allows kids to to cartwheels and tumbles and ensure a soft landing.

Many people also buy these for doing warm up or cool down stretching exercises, before going for a jog or run.

Many people also buy these to use when they go camping, hiking or heading off to an outdoor concert.

How Much Do Folding Exercise Mats Cost?

The price for these mats will vary depending on the quality and the brand. Typically though, and to give you an idea, they range anything between £10-25. Some of the very high end ones can get up to £60-80. For most people though, you should expect to pay around £20-25 for a good quality exercise mat.

Folding Exercise Mat Buying Guide

We always like to include a buyer's guide for anyone considering buying one of these mats. Although we have identified and reviewed the top 5 folding exercise mats above, we think this guide will prove useful, for those who have not quite made up their mind as yet.

Non-Slip Mats

For us, nothing matters quite so much as making sure you do not get injured when exercising. If you are going to use a mat, make sure it is non-slip. Most people will use some form of training shoes when exercising. These of course have a very good grip, well most of them do. However many people will use these bare footed, such as younger gymnasts.

Nonetheless, you want to be sure that you also have a mat, that allows you to workout, without the risk of slippage. So although the trainers look after the surface of the mat, it is the risk of the whole mat sliding that you want to avoid.

Manufacturers of these mats will clearly state on their product, if they have this non-slip feature. It essentially means that the part of the mat, that touches the floor will not slide, move or slip. You can also buy non slip under covers for these types of mats.

Lightweight Mats

There is a very important balance to be had. For sure we want something light to carry around. However we also want it to be heavy enough to last, and also heavy enough so as it does not slip. It can be hard to find one like that. You can refer to our recommendations above, if in any doubt.

Foam Thickness

It very much depends what you are going to use the folding mat for, as to which thickness of foam you should opt for. Too thick and it makes the feet difficult to move. Too thin and it does not offer a huge amount of protection. The thickness of the foam can vary from 3 cm to 6 cm, with the most popular being 4 cm.

Moisture Clearing

Depending on the intensity of your workout, there can be quite a lot of sweat. Often that will pool and drip on to the mat below. That can over time lead to two problems. The mat can get quite sticky from sweat and also mildew can build up on the mat. Wiping with a damp cloth after each use will go a long way to preventing that.

We would also recommend washing once a month with soap and water. Try not to store your mat in a dark and damp space.

Folding and Carrying Handles

No-one wants to be lugging around 6 feet long mats. All of the good ones will fold up, either into 3 or into 4. Any decent exercise mat of this kind should also come with a strong carrying handle. Normally that reduces the size down to about 2 feet by 2 feet, and that makes it easy to carry and store away.

We hope that you have found the information useful to help you decide which is the best folding mat for your needs.
