Are Protein Shakes Good for Cyclists?

Protein helps our bodies rebuild muscle and as such forms part of our daily nutrition. We get this if we eat food such as chicken, fish, meat, beans, eggs, nuts and milk. Most people will consume some of this type of food each day. If so you are likely getting more than enough protein for normal daily activity.

When you are cycling though, and especially on long cycling routes, then you may need to top that protein intake up. That is where something like a protein powder can be very useful. They are really helpful for anyone who doesn't want the inconvenience of having to make another meal.

Endurance athletes use these to help offset muscle damage and to promote recovery. This is what really does help anyone who cycles on a serious level. Protein powders on their own are not sufficient as they do need to be taken in conjunction with a healthy diet.

How Much Protein Should Cyclists Take Daily?

There are disagreements about this and you will find different recommendations depending on what you are looking for. It really comes down to two main things though and those are what shape you are in, and what weight you are.

  • If you are a fit and healthy with an athletic build or actively working on building your physique, then the recommendation is 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (2.2 g per kg)
  • If you are not as active then try 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight (1.6 g of protein per kg).

Which Type of Protein Powder is Best for Cyclists?

There are a lot of choices on the UK market, and our top 5 list shows those we believe to be the beat.

  • Just remember that whey and casein proteins derive from milk, and will help rebuild muscle
  • Whey is easier to absorb into the body and is usually less cheaper than casein

If you can afford a casein then go for it. We have however found that whey is cheaper, mixes better and tastes better so we would recommend that one as your choice.
