The reality is that a treadmill is just not the right piece of equipment for everyone. Always consider your budget and how much you want to spend. If this is just for general exercise there is no need to break the bank. There are plenty of these for around £70-150 that will give you a good general workout.

If you want a better quality machine then it will cost £300+ but at that stage you are moving into very high quality machines for the ultimate style of workout.

Size of the Running Deck

This is probably the most important thing to consider when buying an actual machine. The deck as it is referred to is the mat that you will walk on or run on. This needs to be long enough to take your stride and wide enough so as you feel comfortable running. The width on these is normally fine for most people, so you should focus on the length.

For walking a cheaper treadmill with a shorter deck will do the job nicely. These are basic treadmills with a maximum speed of around 10 mph. They also will have a feature where you can set an incline or slope. Usually this is set to a maximum of 10 degrees.


Almost any machine that your purchase will probably have some form of incline or slope as an option. This is a very important feature to have as it offers walkers and runners alike, the opportunity to widen their scope of fitness options. We all know that running up an incline, even a gentle one, is tougher than running on the flat. It is also better for increasing lung capacity.

Foe those who want to lose weight, then you will burn off a great deal more calories by running up even a small incline. On treadmills there are usually two ways to set the incline. They are either set manually where you have to get off and set it up, or, electrically where you input a quick setting and the motor will do this for you. I know when I bought my first treadmill, my biggest fear is that I wouldn't get enough use out of it. Well certainly not enough use, to justify the spend. This sounds like a small thing, but it would surprise you how many treadmills do not have this feature. It can be really annoying having to hold a bottle in your hand, or stop to have a drink.

BOREDOM - If you get bored then consider buying a treadmill with lots of user programs or one that is iFit compatible? These may initially seem like small things, but for a few extra pounds, it means you're actually going to enjoy your workout.

WHERE WILL YOU USE THE TREADMILL? - Place your treadmill in a well-lit, open and stimulating place. Avoid staring at walls when you are walking or running, as that will drive you cuckoo. Maybe you could have it facing the television or facing a window where you can have an attractive view.

MAKE AN EXERCISE PLAN. Before you start using your treadmill make a simple plan to follow. Write down how long and what kind of workout you'll be doing in week 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, as that will help keep you on track. Have fun with it and you'll be motivated to achieve your health goals (and get maximum benefits from your treadmill!)

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS - Follow your plan and take notes of your progress. Nothing motivates better. DO not make your challenges too difficult. It is ok to have short term goals like, "I'll walk for at least 10 minutes." or "I'll do 10-30 second intervals." These are easy to do and you'll probably go beyond them - which will encourage you even further.
