Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard 100% is the world’s bestselling and most highly recommended protein powder of all times, and with good reason. This product has won BodyBuilding.com’s highly coveted “Protein of the Year Award” an astounding 11 years in a row- which is pretty incredible as the award was only created back in 2005.
Gold standard 100% whey is a regular part of millions of fitness fanatic’s daily nutrition regiment around the globe. The product has also gained notoriety amongst celebrities as well as pro athletes, most notably IFBB pro Steve Cook and bikini/fitness model Belinda Risteski are both big advocates of the product.
But the real question is, does Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% whey live up to all the hype?
Or is it just too good to be true?Let’s get into it.
Who is Gold Standard 100% Whey for?
One of the best things about this product is it isn’t over specialised to appeal to a market niche, making this product ideal for anyone who enjoys fitness and incorporates protein shakes as part of their daily nutrition plan.
If you are someone who just wants one effective reliable product to help kick start your muscle growth instead of multiple products, then this is definitely the protein powder for you.
Gold Standard 100% Whey Key Features Overview
Outstanding Amino Acid Profile
First things first, when you are looking to purchase any variety of protein powder, the first factor that often stands out is the products “Protein content per serving”.
Yes, this is important. However, a major factor that is often overlooked is the breakdown of the products amino acid profile. This is essentially what separates an average protein powder from an exceptional protein powder.
Gold Standard 100% Whey contains an astounding 24g of protein per serving. That 24g protein content in comprised of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and whey peptides (aka hydrolysed whey).
Each serving also contains 5.5g of naturally occurring BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids) which are 3 essential amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine). BCAAs support muscle growth and maintenance. BCAAs have also been found to boost fat loss over time.
Each serving also contains 4g of glutamine and glutamine acid which is the most abundant naturally occurring protein in the human body.
Glutamine supports muscle maintenance and also helps support your immune system.Glutamine levels in your body are drastically reduced during intense workouts leaving your body vulnerable to illness so Gold standard 100% whey is a great way to replenish your glutamine levels to keep you sickness free and performing all year round.
Exceptional mixability and consistency
A problem I find with many protein powders is their mixability and consistency, no one likes to a drink horrible lumpy protein shake.
Gold Standard 100% Whey is made up of both whey protein isolates as well as hydrolyzed whey which both blend seamlessly into both milk and water. This makes it a perfect option for anyone who isn’t a big fan of mixing their protein powder with dairy products or simply just wants to reduce their calorie intake.
In terms of consistency the product is excellent it forms a very smooth protein shake that goes down very easily. The directions say to mix each serving with roughly 200ml. However if you’re a fan of thicker creamier protein shakes like me, I recommend adding 50g of the product to 300ml of liquid.
Fast protein absorption
The product’s protein content is made up of Whey protein micro-fractioned whey protein and ultra-filtered whey protein concentrate which are the purest forms of Whey protein.
This is a major selling point of this product as it makes the protein much easier to digest and promotes rapid protein absorption. This makes gold standard extremely effective in terms of recovering from hard training sessions and maximises muscle growth.

What Customers Like About Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey - Pros
Scanning through the many online customer reviews of this product something that is mentioned time and time again is how great this product tastes. With the many customers stating that the product tastes superior to cheaper protein powder alternatives.
Customers loved the taste of this product for 3 key reasons;
Firstly, the product comes in 11 distinct flavours with “extreme milk chocolate” being one of the most popular purchases. So it’s inevitable at least one flavour will appeal to your particular taste preferences.
Secondly, the consistency of the product is fantastic it mixes well, forming a smooth shake that doesn't leave you feeling bloated.
Thirdly, this protein powder doesn’t leave an awful chemical aftertaste once you have finished drinking it, unlike many other cheap whey protein powder alternatives.
Note, I cannot speak from my own experience as I have never tried this specific flavour. However, the only negative reviews I have noticed in relation how this product tastes is that the strawberry flavour variation received the least positive feedback- So maybe avoid that one!
Reliability and effectiveness
Does the product work?
According to the majority of customer reviews on Amazon this product often met and exceeded customers’ expectations.
Customers typically found that taking this product as part of their diet and gym plan allowed them to maintain and grow muscle much easier than other products they had tried in the past.
I personally used this product during a cutting phase where I was doing HIIT cardio 3-4 times a week which typically causes your body to lose fat as well as muscle mass. However, using this after workouts helped me to reduce my body fat and still maintain the muscle I had built before which was amazing.
What Customers Didn't Like - Cons
For many customers who had previously used cheaper protein powders they were sceptical as to the value for money of this product versus alternative brands.
This product costs £40-43 on average for 2.27 KG which is about £5 higher than other lower end brands. However, from my own experience I am more willing to pay the extra £5 for a product that I know will give me reliable results
So does it live up to all the hype?
Ultimately, we can conclude that this product definitely lives up to its reputation. It has a fantastic amino acid profile that effectively aids both muscle growth and recovery from grueling gym sessions. If we were to recommend any “one” protein powder we definitely would suggest trying Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard 100% Whey.
